I Hate Vista

Published by Ron at 2:59 pm under Ron's Rambling

Not exactly breaking news here, but let me add my name to the list of people who HATE Windows Vista. My new Lenovo X61 laptop came with it (no other choice) and I can safely say it sucks ass. My beast of a HP laptop, now almost two years old, runs MUCH faster on XP than this new notebook. And the X61 is a dual core 2 GHz proc! It boots slow. Comes out of sleep mode awful-slow. Constantly asks me to confirm this and confirm that. Honestly, I just want my god-damn laptop to work. I don’t give a rats ass about fancy UI graphics. I just want to get things done! Wait, wait, wait. I feel like I’m using a 33 MHz Windows 3.1 machine. Utterly horrible.

So bye-bye Vista, hello XP. I’d rather deal with the endless search for drivers than deal with Vista and it’s 3 start bar icons telling me that I’m connected to a WAP. Ugh!

(I can’t go pure-Linux, because a lot of my work in Windows based (SQL Server, for example). However, I do have a bootable USB flash drive, for those moments when I want to do *nix.)

Some of the visual stuff is nice, but, my god, it’s just too damn slow. It’s like working on a laptop from 1998.

I do like their network stuff; makes things easier. But I haven’t seen ANTHING that makes Vista a “must have”. Plus, a lot of my Open Source software runs better on XP than Vista, so why bother?

Also, when an operating system runs faster off a USB Fob (Knoppix) than a hard disk (Vista) you KNOW that something is wrong. :-)

Hell yeah, I’m annoyed by Vista it’s too damn slow. When I used to the laptop for a simple powerpoint presentation it took awhile to get out of sleep mode and then it work fine. Vista is extremely slow and annoying with it’s many inquiries pop-ups. I’m very glad Ron has chosen to WHIP IT OUT!!!! Good Riddance !!! Thanks Ron.

I managed to install XP on the new laptop (from boot to finish) in about 1/2 hour. That was FAR shorter than the time it took to do an “in place” upgrade of Vista from Home to Ultimate! I had to mess around for about another hour to get all the drivers, but now the laptop is fine.

Boot time is about 1/4 the time of the Vista boot, and everything loads nice and quick. (Office 2K3 apps open almost instantly.)

I’l all for progress, but it was just too annoying. Why should I sit around for 30 seconds for a computer to come out of “sleep” mode when I can do it in under 5?

I’d rather have a machine that does what I need quickly than a bunch of glitzy crap I don’t use anyway. That side-bar is a good example: It’s cool for about a day, and then you never use it again.

Even when I turn off their “Aero” interface (which never worked on the laptop anyway), it was still drag ass slow. And this is a machine right out of the box. (Though, it’s not Microsoft’s fault that Lenovo puts an assload of not-useful utilties on their machines.)

Anyhow, I’ve got XP on there now, and 99% of the drivers (dunno what the missing ones are; need to research more). It’s running fast, like it should have.
