Moving To Vallejo Street
It’s been a super busy week for both of us. On Tuesday I got back from Chicago, signed the lease for the new house, and started our adventure. Since then, we’ve done a bunch of stuff over the last couple of days.
- Went to Ikea and picked up a new desk for my office and a desk/workspace for Evelyn’s electronics.
- Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, cleaned. Evelyn did all of this work.
- Didn’t like our dirty ceilings in the back/kitchen area, so we repainted those.
- Realized how nice it looked with fresh paint, so decided to do the front room, too.
- Moved just about everything that can go in the car to the new house. We still have the kitchen to break down, probably today. Furniture next week, probably.
- Went to Lowes, got some stuff. Went to Home Depot, got even more stuff.
- Did my best to stimulate the American Economy through excessive Consumer Spending.
- Got data drops installed. AT&T DSL on Tuesday, Cable on Wednesday. Cable Quality Control came back on Friday, found install issues and fixed them. Yet another QC person will be out to check on the other QC quy. That’s night-and-day service from what we had at the apartment. Go figure. AT&T and TWC are fighting over who can provide faster data drops. Competition is good.
- Bought and hung Christmas lights outside the house. We’ll try and take a photo.
- Went to Office Depot. Got stuff for our offices (chair mats).
- Bought a rake. Raked leaves. Got tired. Stopped. Need to rake more. A lot more.
- Removed about a bazillion nails and screws from the walls. Past residents must have had a cross over every door. Is the house possessed? We’ll see. I really enjoyed the 2 1/2″ long screws used to hold a two foot long curtain rod.
- Installed security bar on the rear patio door.
- Ripped out stupid blinds from the bathroom and replaced with removable stick-on LIghtEffects stuff. You can find them at Home Depot. Gives you “etched glass” look without the etching. They also have stained glass designs that look nice. If you have a window with a useless/ugly view, consider taking a look at this product.
- Lined the cabinets with heavy plastic stuff from Ikea. Evelyn did a great job on this.
- Address change, address change, address change, ad nauseum.
- Installed a doorbell. Already used — by the cable guy on Friday.
- …and probably a million other things I’ve already forgotten.
Today Evelyn is painting the front room walls and I’ll be cleaning up the bathroom and lining the cabinets in there. The house is coming together, and just about ready for the furniture. Later on we might hit the storage place and pull out some things (speakers, etc) that we couldn’t fit in the old apartment.
I did find my network camera, so I’ll set that up later today. You’ll get an exciting view of our backyard filled with leaves.

I can’t wait for some pictures. I am happy that everything is moving along
Oh there are woodpeckers and parrot in the backyard, so when you view the network cam watch out for them.
Loads of work and as Ron said it’s coming together.
Great way to burn some fat, LOL.
“I really enjoyed the 2 1/2? long screws used to hold a two foot long curtain rod.”
Oh, man, “enjoyed”…LMAO
I like the LightEffects product — which one did you pick?
And you have a PARROT in your yard? Get a photo right away! What kind?
We originally got their “Texture 12″ for the bathroom, but you could still see too many shadows at night. So, we moved that the the garage door and replaced with their “Magnolia” in the bathroom. They have a couple of designs that aren’t on their site.
It gives a really neat stained glass look, and is cool too see from the outside at night. I’ll take a photo and post it.
We also bought some of the Light Effects for the side door a few months ago. We had not put it yet, but we liked how it look in the store. Ours was a blue flower. Forgot the name.
The key to installing it is following the directions.
First, make sure to cut it a little on the small size. ANY overlap on the trim/wood will cause it to pull away.
Second, be sure to use plenty of water/soap in a spray bottle. It’s easier to install that way. You use the little squeegee they supply to get the water/bubbles out.
Third, make sure to apply the smooth side (the side you pull the paper backing from) against the glass. If it doesn’t seem to be sticking, you probably have it backwards. (It happened to me.)
Finally, it is NOT like some decal for a model car. You can peel it off and reposition a lot. My garage door ones were peeling and shifted about six times with no harm. They are actually very forgiving. Just be careful and use a sharp utility knife and straight edge when cutting.
